LASIK Basics: Laser Surgery and Insurance

If you’ve ever been curious about correcting vision problems with laser eye surgery, then you’ve probably also wondered about the costs involved for LASIK. Is LASIK expensive? Will your vision insurance cover all or part of the costs LASIK? Does the price vary depending on your situation? Are there ever any discounts? Here are is some helpful information about what your VSP vision insurance may help cover for LASIK surgery.

Prescreening for LASIK Surgery

Sometimes LASIK is riskier to perform when your eyes have certain physical characteristics or abnormalities. A prescreening is always necessary to determine if you’re a suitable candidate for laser eye surgery. If your eye doctor is already a certified laser vision care doctor, then he or she will do the exam personally; otherwise, they will refer you to another for your initial consultation.

LASIK FAQ: How do I use my LASIK vision insurance benefit?

While LASIK is usually categorized as an elective cosmetic surgery, VSP is one of the few vision insurance providers with benefits that reduce your out-of-pocket expenses.

  1. Check to see if your vision plan has the VSP Laser VisionCare Program benefit.
  2. Confirm that your current VSP eye doctor is a laser vision care expert. If not, ask for a referral or find a LASIK doctor in your area.
  3. Schedule your appointment for a pre-operation screening with your chosen laser vision care doctor. They will coordinate the surgery with a reputable VSP laser vision center.
  4. Afterward, your VSP eye doctor will monitor your eyes for the entire recovery period and your benefits will apply automatically to the cost.

The overall price will depend on the type of surgery you require. VSP sets a maximum cost you will pay per eye for each type of laser surgery, so even if you don’t have comprehensive coverage, you will never pay an excessive amount out-of-pocket.

Other Ways to Make LASIK Affordable

Most vision centers also provide options to finance the surgery over a period ranging from 6 to 24 months. This could make your monthly payments as low as $60 per month. It’s also possible to pay for LASIK using pretax funds from a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flex Spending Account (FSA). This option could save you up to 30% on your surgery.

If it’s not important that you get the laser surgery immediately to correct your vision, then waiting for a discount at a preapproved laser vision center will save you money. To bring in new clients, laser surgery centers sometimes provide special offers on LASIK. VSP has a page where special offers on LASIK are published as well.

The importance of using VSP-approved LASIK doctors and centers

VSP maintains a comprehensive list of preapproved laser vision doctors and laser vision centers. To ensure the highest quality, credibility, and safety during the course of your LASIK surgery and recovery, always select specialists and centers from this list. Out-of-network centers may not have the same certifications or quality standards, and this could increase your chances of complications related to the surgery. Your eyes will thank you.

If you’re uncertain about LASIK and how you might pay for it, then schedule an appointment with your eye doctor today using your VSP Individual Vision Plan. If you don’t have vision insurance, find out how VSP can help you save on your next eye exam or pair of glasses.
